Membranes have aided in the cost-effective method of water purification. Total dissolved solids, heavy metals, organic pollutants, viruses, bacteria, and other dissolved contaminants have all been proven to be greatly reduced by reverse osmosis (RO) membranes

One way in which an RO membrane works is like a screen door, allowing air molecules to pass through but blocking pests and anything larger than the holes in the screen door. Another example is a clothing fabric which contains a very thin plastic film with billions of small pores. These pores are still big enough to let water vapour through while also being small enough to stop liquid water from passing.

The number one indicator is when the RO system simply stops producing water or the flow of the RO water is weaker than it used to be. Next, if your RO system is running constantly that is another sign that it is time to replace your membrane.
