Well Water Treatment Systems

Tailored Well Water Systems | Private Borehole Treatment

Many rural and suburban areas across Ireland are entirely disconnected from the public mains infrastructure, relying instead on their own private well or borehole to supply their homes. However, drinking water drawn directly from natural groundwater sources carries inherent structural, chemical, and microbiological risks that can compromise your family’s health and damage your home.

While deep soil layers offer a natural degree of filtration, shallow wells and unsealed boreholes remain highly vulnerable to environmental contamination. Furthermore, the quality of well water fluctuates aggressively throughout the year, driven by shifting seasonal climatic conditions such as heavy winter rainfall, flooding runoff, or extended summer dry spells.

Because private groundwater sources are entirely unregulated by municipal authorities, it is the sole legal and practical responsibility of the homeowner to ensure that the water entering the property is clean, compliant, and safe for consumption.

Common Problems Affecting Irish Well Water

Naturally sourced raw groundwater in Ireland rarely meets strict drinking water standards without intervention. If left untreated, a private well can subject a household to an endless array of frustrating and costly issues:

  • Excessive Lime & Limescale: High concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium blanket heating elements in boilers, showers, and kettles—sky-rocketing energy bills and causing premature breakdowns.

  • Bacterial Contamination: Agricultural runoff, slurry spreading, or failing septic tanks allow dangerous pathogens like E. coli, Coliforms, and Cryptosporidium to breach the water table.

  • Heavy Metal Staining: Dissolved iron and manganese leave unsightly, stubborn orange-brown or pitch-black stains across your laundry, porcelain sanitary ware, and premium chrome fixtures.

  • Aggressive Pipe Corrosion: Acidic groundwater with a low pH acts as a solvent, eating away at internal copper plumbing, creating pinhole leaks, and leaving behind distinct blue-green copper stains.

  • Offensive Odours & Tastes: Dissolved hydrogen sulphide gas creates a highly offensive, suffocating rotten egg smell, while high mineral counts leave a bitter, metallic taste.

Our Engineered Well Water Solutions

We don’t believe in generic, box-shifting retail kits. At One Eight, our technical team designs a tailored water treatment solution matched precisely to the unique chemical and biological footprint of your private borehole:

Multi-Stage Filtration Architectures

  • Ion-Exchange Water Softeners: For guaranteed 100% elimination of destructive limescale.

  • Advanced Oxidation Filters: To permanently oxidise and screen out heavy iron, manganese, and sulphur odours.

  • Limestone Neutraliser Vessels: To stabilise acidic pH levels and stop copper pipe erosion.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) Sterilisers: Backed by 5-micron pre-filters to deliver 100% chemical-free destruction of waterborne bacteria.

💰 Avail of Government Well Grants

If your private water supply fails a certified laboratory test due to high mineral concentrations or biological activity, you may qualify for the Domestic Well Grant Scheme. This Department of Housing initiative under the Rural Water Programme can cover up to 85% of the capital expenditure required to install a professional treatment system.

  • Iron & Manganese Removal Units: Eliminate metallic tastes, orange staining, and black residue.

  • Ultraviolet (UV) Sterilisers: Neutralise harmful bacteria, E. coli, and viruses without chemicals.

  • pH Balancing & Neutralising Units: Correct acidic water to prevent copper pipe corrosion and blue-green staining.

  • Sulphur Removal Systems: Eradicate the unpleasant “rotten egg” smell from your water supply.

Why You Need a Professional Well Water Analysis

No two wells are identical. To ensure you get the right filtration setup, we always recommend a comprehensive well water analysis before choosing a system.

A detailed laboratory water test allows us to:

  1. Identify the exact contaminants and bacteria levels present in your supply.

  2. Specise the precise, cost-effective filtration system tailored to your exact needs.

  3. Prevent you from spending money on equipment you don’t actually require.

Private Well Water Grants (Ireland)

Did you know you could save money on your water treatment installation? Depending on the level of contaminants found in your water test, you may qualify for the Housing (Private Water Supply Financial Assistance) Regulations grant.

This government grant is designed to help rural households cover the cost of resolving well water issues, including the installation of water softeners, filtration units, and UV systems.

Private Well Water Treatment Grants in Ireland

If your home relies on a private individual water supply, you may be eligible for significant financial assistance under the Rural Water Programme.

Unlike public mains, private wells are not automatically monitored by water testing authorities. This leaves the responsibility of ensuring clean, safe drinking water entirely on the homeowner. To assist rural households, the Irish Government provides Well Grant Schemes to fund critical improvement works, advanced water filtration, and disinfection systems.

New Well Grant Categories & Funding Amounts

The grant scheme is structured to ease the capital expenditure of securing a wholesome water supply. Funding is divided into three distinct categories:

Grant Category Maximum Coverage Details & Conditions
Water Quality Treatment 100% of costs (Max €1,000) Covers UV disinfection and chemical-free filtration systems to eliminate bacteria and contaminants.
Rehabilitation Works 85% of costs (Max €3,000) Covers deepening an existing bore, relining, or clearing silt to increase water yield.
Provision of a New Well 85% of costs (Max €5,000) Funded if the local authority agrees a completely new well is the only viable long-term solution.

Important Note: The Water Quality Treatment grant can be claimed on its own or added directly to a rehabilitation or new well claim. The minimum approved cost of works must exceed €750 to qualify.

What Kind of Work Qualifies?

The scheme explicitly funds capital works that bring your water supply up to European Union (Drinking Water) Regulations standards. Qualifying works include:

  • Water Treatment Equipment: Advanced water filtration and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems (Note: Standard water softeners intended solely for limescale or aesthetic issues are typically excluded from standalone treatment grants).

  • Drilling & Engineering: Drilling a completely new well or deepening an existing borehole.

  • Pumping Facilities: Provision or upgrade of essential water pumps and mechanical/electrical equipment.

  • Source Improvement: Upgrading structural facilities, pump houses, or drawing from secure surface water sources.

Am I Eligible for the Well Grant Scheme?

To qualify for funding through your local authority, your property and application must meet the following strict criteria:

  • Alternative Supply: The house cannot be reasonably served by a public water main or an existing Group Water Scheme.

  • Property Age: Your house must be fully constructed and occupied for over 7 years.

  • Prior Claims: You must not have received a private well grant for the same property within the last 7 years.

  • Occupancy Status: The home must be your normal place of residence (includes long-term rentals).

  • Commercial Exclusions: Private holiday homes, short-term holiday rentals, self-catering properties, mobile homes, and local authority-owned properties are strictly excluded.

How to Apply: Let Us Handle the Paperwork

Securing a local authority water grant can be a complex, paper-heavy, and lengthy process. Applications must be submitted directly to your local county council using Form PWS 1a.

Crucially, no installation work can begin before the council conducts a prior site inspection, or your grant will be voided. Furthermore, a comprehensive independent water test is required to prove a serious deficiency exists before any equipment can be approved.

How  One Eight Filtration Can Help:

  1. Certified Water Testing: We carry out the mandatory independent laboratory water test to pinpoint your exact water quality issues.

  2. System Specification: We design the precise filtration or UV layout required to satisfy the local authority’s standards.

  3. Application Support: Our experienced team walks you through the entire process, helping you complete and submit Form PWS 1a to ensure a smooth approval.
